Membership Categories of the College of Surgeons of Sri Lanka

1. FULL MEMBER
A Surgeon who holds the Degree of Master of Surgery (MS) / Surgery or Degree of Doctor of Medicine (MD) / Surgery from the University of Colombo and who is Board Certified as a Specialist in a surgical discipline by the Postgraduate Institute of Medicine of the University of Colombo.

Full member category also includes,
(a) Surgeons entitled to privileges of board certification of the Postgraduate Institute of Medicine of the University of Colombo
(b) Surgeons who have held permanent consultant surgeon positions in the Department of Health of Sri Lanka.
(c) Surgeons who have held faculty positions in Sri Lankan Universities/ Medical schools and who have appropriate training and board certifiable qualifications that are recognized by the board of study in surgery of the Postgraduate Institute of Medicine of the University of Colombo.

Membership fee (Life) – Rs. 50,000/=


2. SENIOR AFFILIATE MEMBER
A Surgical Trainee in a surgical discipline who holds the Degree of Master of Surgery (MS) / Surgery or Degree of Doctor of Medicine (MD) / Surgery from the University of Colombo but who has not yet completed the appropriate training and/or who is not board certified.

-A senior affiliate member shall not be elected or appointed to the Council of the College.
-A senior affiliate member may not serve in committees working on surgery curriculum and disciplinary decisions.
– A senior affiliate member has voting rights at general meetings and elections of the College.

Membership fee
(Once only subscription) – Rs. 5,000/=


3. JUNIOR AFFILIATE MEMBER
A Surgical Trainee who has completed the Master of Surgery (MS) Part I Examination or Doctor of Medicine (Surgery) Part I Examination or Selection Examination for MD (Surgery) of the University of Colombo or parts 1, 2 and 3 examinations or Part A and Part B examinations for the Membership of any of the Royal Colleges of Surgeons (MRCS) of the United Kingdom or Ireland.

-A junior affiliate member shall not be elected or appointed to the council of CSSL.
– A junior affiliate member shall not rise to any other member category until the requirements of that category are fulfilled.
-A junior affiliate member may not serve in committees working on surgery curriculum and disciplinary decisions.
-A junior affiliate member has no right to vote at general meetings or elections of the College.

Membership fee
(Once only subscription) – Rs. 1,000/=


4. ASSOCIATE MEMBER
The following will be considered for associate membership of the College.
(a) Overseas surgeons who provide training positions to Sri Lankan trainees or overseas surgeons who have links with the College. They shall be offered associate membership by the Council of the College based on recommendations of a membership subcommittee of the College.

Associate members (Honorary) – No fee
(b) Individuals functioning as surgeons in Sri Lanka who do not fulfill the criteria defined above for Full Membership. They should have a recognized specialist certification in another country or equivalent standing. Their applications and curricula vitae should be carefully scrutinized for equivalence by a membership subcommittee and approved by the Council of the College

-An associate member shall not be elected or appointed to the Council of the College.
-An associate member shall not have voting rights at general meetings or elections of the College.

Membership fee (Life) – Rs.10,000/=


Affiliate members both Senior and Junior will be upgraded to the appropriate category when they fulfill the eligibility criteria and pay the balance membership fee stipulated
