- Duration and Format: An intensive two-day program combining interactive lectures, skill stations, and simulated patient scenarios.
- Multidisciplinary Focus: Designed for the entire trauma team, including surgeons, emergency physicians, anaesthetists, and nursing staff, fostering inter-professional collaboration.
- Standardized Protocol: Teaches a systematic, step-wise approach to trauma assessment (Primary, Secondary, and Tertiary Surveys) based on IATSIC guidelines.
- Practical Skill Stations: Hands-on training in essential procedures such as:
- Airway management and intubation.
- Chest decompression (needle and tube thoracostomy).
- Vascular access (including intraosseous access).
- Splinting and spinal immobilization.
- Simulation and Scenarios: Includes mock trauma drills and case-based discussions to apply knowledge in real-time, high-pressure situations.
Course Director – Dr. Kamal Jayasuriya
Global Chair – Dr. Ranjith Ellawala
Upon successful completion of the NTMC, participants should be able to:
- Demonstrate proficiency in performing the Primary Survey (ABCDE) to identify and immediately manage life-threatening conditions.
- Recognize the physiology of trauma triage and prioritize patients based on the severity of their injuries.
- Initiate appropriate resuscitation strategies for patients in hemorrhagic shock, including fluid therapy and the indications for blood transfusion.
- Manage specific injury patterns, including thoracic, abdominal, and musculoskeletal trauma, using evidence-based interventions.
- Safely perform critical procedures covered in the skill stations.
- Interpret diagnostic findings (X-rays, FAST scans) to guide clinical decision-making.
- Coordinate effectively as a team leader or member during a simulated trauma resuscitation.
- Make appropriate decisions regarding the need for patient transfer to a higher level of care or tertiary referral center.
- Apply principles of mass casualty management, particularly relevant for trainees in disaster management and military medicine.
- Understand the role of the surgeon and the trauma team within a broader disaster response framework.
- Execute effective communication and team leadership during simulated trauma resuscitations, fostering confidence in high-pressure situations.
