Your career stage is unique, and so is our membership. Whether you are a Junior Affiliate, a Senior Affiliate, a Full Member, or a Fellow, we provide the support you need to develop your knowledge and skills.

Membership Categories and Benefits

1. Affiliate Membership

Are you a registrar or a senior registrar in surgery ? Affiliate with CSSL and benefit from support and guidance at every step of your career journey. CSSL offers two affiliate categories – Junior and Senior See below

You qualify as a Junior Affiliate Member if you are a Surgical Trainee who has successfully completed one of the following:

  • Master of Surgery (MS) Part I Examination, OR
  • Doctor of Medicine (Surgery) Part I Examination, OR
  • Selection Examination for MD (Surgery) of the University of Colombo, OR
  • Parts 1, 2, and 3 examinations for the Membership of the Royal Colleges of Surgeons (MRCS) of the UK or Ireland, OR
  • Part A and Part B examinations for the MRCS of the UK or Ireland.
Rights and Restrictions

If you hold this membership category, the following restrictions apply to you within the CSSL:

Membership fee – Rs. 1,000 ( One-time payment )

You qualify as a Senior Affiliate Member if you are a Surgical Trainee in a surgical discipline who meets the following criteria:

  • Holds the Degree of Master of Surgery (MS/Surgery) OR the Degree of Doctor of Medicine (MD/Surgery) from the University of Colombo.
  • AND has not yet completed the appropriate training and/or is not yet board certified.

Rights and Restrictions

If you hold this membership category, the following rules apply to you within the CSSL:

  • Council Representation: You cannot be elected or appointed to the Council of the CSSL.
  • Committee Service: You are not permitted to serve on committees that deal with the surgery curriculum or disciplinary decisions.
  • Voting Rights: Unlike the Junior Affiliate category, a Senior Affiliate Member has the right to vote at General Meetings and Elections of the College.
Membership fee – Rs. 5,000 ( One-time payment )

2. Full Membership

You qualify as a Full Member if you meet the primary criterion or fall under one of the specific inclusions.

Primary Criteria:
  • You are a Surgeon who holds the Degree of Master of Surgery (MS/Surgery) OR the Degree of Doctor of Medicine (MD/Surgery) from the University of Colombo.
  • AND you are Board Certified as a Specialist in a surgical discipline by the Postgraduate Institute of Medicine (PGIM) of the University of Colo
The Full Member category also includes the following surgeons:
  • Surgeons who are entitled to the privileges of board certification of the PGIM of the University of Colombo.
  • Surgeons who have held permanent consultant surgeon positions in the Department of Health of Sri Lanka.
  • Surgeons who have held faculty positions in Sri Lankan Universities/Medical schools AND who have appropriate training and board certifiable qualifications that are recognized by the Board of Study in Surgery of the PGIM of the University of Colombo.
Rights and Restrictions:

If you hold this membership category, the following rules apply to you within the CSSL:

  • Council Representation:  Eligible to be elected or appointed to the Council
  • Committee Service: Eligible to serve on all committees, including those for curriculum and disciplinary decisions.
  • Voting Rights:  have full voting rights
Membership fee – Rs. 50,000 ( One-time payment )

3. Associate Membership

Associate membership is offered in two different categories. You may be considered if you fall into one of the following

(a) Overseas Surgeons (Honorary - No Fee)
(b) Surgeons Functioning in Sri Lanka (Non-Board Certified Locally)
  • Overseas surgeons who provide training positions to Sri Lankan trainees.
  • OR Overseas surgeons who have links with the College.
  • Process: They shall be offered associate membership by the Council of the College based on recommendations of a membership subcommittee.
  • Individuals functioning as surgeons in Sri Lanka who do not fulfill the criteria for Full Membership (i.e., do not hold MS/MD from Colombo or PGIM Board Certification).
  • AND they should have a recognized specialist certification in another country OR equivalent standing.
  • Process: Their applications and curricula vitae must be carefully scrutinized for equivalence by a membership subcommittee and approved by the Council of the College.
Restrictions

If you hold this membership category, the following restrictions apply to you within the CSSL:

  • Council Representation: You cannot be elected or appointed to the Council of the College.
  • Voting Rights: You have no right to vote at General Meetings or Elections of the College.
Membership fee – Rs. 10,000 ( One-time payment )
